#Shocker: Pupils Swim To School In Shama District[+Photos]

Written by on June 22, 2014

Dorkokope is a farming community near Daboase junction in the Shama District of the Western Region.
The torrential rains there have flooded all routes leading to the Borkor Kopkope Catholic Primary School.

The only option for eager and determined pupils seeking to attain at least basic education is to swim their way through the floods to school. The fortunate ones would have to cram into about a four-foot-wide canoe to cross the flooded areas.

Most parents say they cannot risk sending their children to school under the circumstance. But some daring pupils take on the adventure of going to school through the flooded area.

Although the teachers show up, the student population has reduced significantly.

The unyielding situation has compelled authorities to shut down the school.

Sources say a contract was given out prior to the 2008 elections, but the contractor abandoned the site after planting some steel rods in the ground.
