The controversial striker has been left “morally destroyed” by yesterday’s
10-match ban for biting Chelsea star Branislav Ivanovic.
Suarez confessed: “I am unhappy because this could break my dream of being
recognised as the best forward in England this year.”
The FA’s punishment has shattered his hopes of finishing Premier League top
scorer and means Suarez will miss the rest of this season plus the first SIX
matches of 2013-14.
Family members in Uruguay claimed Suarez was feeling “morally destroyed” over
the ban.
Liverpool, who have until noon tomorrow to appeal, said they were “shocked and
disappointed” at the length of the suspension.
Club officials fear Suarez could want out if he feels he has been the victim
of a witch-hunt.
Ladbrokes offer just 6-4 on him not playing for the Reds again.
Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre said: “The club and player are both
shocked and disappointed at the severity of today’s decision.”
Despite his previous poor disciplinary record, Suarez claimed he should have
copped just a three-game ban for violent conduct.
The player’s agent, Pere Guardiola, is set to meet Liverpool officials next
week for talks which could end with a move abroad.
Suarez refused to comment on the possibility of leaving Anfield but did say:
“I’m not thinking about my future, but my image.
“I am not a violent player. What happened with Ivanovic was instinctive and I
am very sorry.”
Suarez has scored 23 league goals this season, one behind Robin van Persie.
But he received an eight-game ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra in 2011
and served a seven-match suspension for biting an opponent while at Ajax in
2010.
Chelsea interim boss Rafa Benitez refused to comment on the length of Suarez’s
ban but said: “Watching the video, I think everyone can see that Luis was
wrong. But we have to carry on and move forward.”
