Sonnie Badu Appeals to President Mahama for Leniency on Sammy Gyamfi

Written by on May 12, 2025

Celebrated Ghanaian musician Sonnie Badu, based in the UK, has publicly appealed to former President John Dramani Mahama and former First Lady Lordina Mahama to show leniency toward Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, following controversy over a viral video.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Badu directly addressed Prez. Mahama, writing:

“Dear dad and mum… I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus. Regarding the recent video involving my brother, please show him mercy.”

The UK-based singer defended Gyamfi’s actions, suggesting he may have attended the event in good faith and discreetly offered money as a gesture of kindness.

“Unfortunately, he was caught on camera,” Badu acknowledged. “In times like these, the optics are certainly unfavorable. But dad, I plead with you—grant him mercy and a second chance.”

Dear dad and mum. @officialjdmahama @mrsldmahama , i greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus. From the recent video circulating of my brother, please show him mercy. It looks like he was invited and in return he blessed them which I have seen many politicians do over the years. From the visuals out, It looks like he was being discreet hence the reason why he did it in the car and not in the church. Unfortunately for him, he was recorded on video. Indeed, in a season such as this, it does not look good but dad please, show him mercy and give him a second chance. It would have been an error for him to go to a church and not bless them. The question here is, was his choice of church the best ? No, based on political affiliations and words uttered against you. And that’s the reason why a lot of foot soldiers are angry. However, as you have taught us to demonstrate peace, unity and maturity, I believe that was his intention … Please dad, show him mercy .. he really fought hard … to all foot soldiers and other members of the party who are offended, it is understandable, but please show mercy. And brother, you owe all foot Soilders a make up party 😂😂😂😂… God bless Our Homeland Ghana 🇬🇭 🇬🇭 Ey3 Zu!

Recognizing the public outcry, Badu also urged National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters to respond with understanding rather than condemnation.

His appeal comes amid mounting pressure for disciplinary action against Gyamfi over the viral incident.
