Ashanti Regional Minister Calls for Unity to Revive Kumawood in Landmark Meeting with Filmmakers

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, held a historic engagement with Kumasi-based filmmakers, popularly known as Kumawood, as part of his official introduction and stakeholder consultations.
This unprecedented move makes him the first Ashanti Regional Minister to meet directly with entertainers, demonstrating his commitment to reviving the region’s creative industry.
During the meeting, Hon. Dr. Amoakohene urged industry players to unite in efforts to revamp the Kumawood movie industry, emphasizing its role in promoting both the Ashanti Region and Ghana at large.
He further revealed that he had been briefed by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) about six waterfalls within the region—an announcement that came as a surprise to many attendees.
Beyond film, the Minister outlined broader creative industry development plans, including scholarship programs for emerging talents and empowerment initiatives for artisans in textile production (Kente, tie-and-dye, and batik), sculpture, and painting.

Stakeholders at the event expressed their appreciation for Dr. Amoakohene’s vision and engagement. Notably, attendees included James Aboagye, President of the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG); Rev. Samuel Nyamekye (Miracle Films), Kaakyire Kwame Appiah (Musician, Producer, Actor), Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu, Asare Bediako (director, actor & script writer), Paul Gee (Paul Gee Films), Peter Mawuli-Ekpe (FIPAG PRO & Welfare Officer), renowned cinematographer Evander Kwame Agyemang, Francis owodze Donkor (Osoro Kyeame Production), amongst others.
In exclusive interviews with Ndwompa Radio, industry players commended the Minister for prioritizing the creative sector. “For the first time, we see a Regional Minister recognizing our contribution to the economy and culture. His vision for scholarships and creative empowerment is a game-changer,” Evander Kwame Agyemang.
Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the youngest Regional Minister in Ghana’s history, has set a bold precedent by directly engaging with filmmakers. His approach signals a new era of collaboration between government and the creative arts industry in the Ashanti Region.
