Dr. Amoakohene Honors Kumawood Legends & Fallen Heroes at Ashanti Festival Celebrations

Written by on April 25, 2025

In a heartfelt tribute to Ghana’s vibrant film industry, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister, honored iconic actors and posthumously recognized late legends of Kumawood during the Ashanti Festival Easter festivities.

The ceremony celebrated their immense contributions to the growth of Ghanaian cinema, with a special focus on both living veterans and fallen heroes who shaped the industry’s golden era.

The honorees included celebrated veterans such as Grace Nortey, Grace Omaboe (fondly known as Maame Dokono), George Appiah Kubi (popularly known as Paa George), Kwaku Twumasi, Naana Hayford, whose decades of storytelling and on-screen charisma laid the foundation for Kumawood’s success.

The event also paid poignant tribute to late stars, including Bob Santo, Kwame Owusu Ansah, Bishop Bernard Nyarko, Sam Adjatefio, (revered for his role as TT in the classic Taxi Driver series) and others.

A delegation led by James Aboagye, President of the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG), along with Bill Asamoah, Asare Bediako, Emmanuel Opoku Anane (Secretary to the committee and aide to the Minister), and others visited the residences of the aged actors to present them with certificates of honor and envelopes containing undisclosed cash gifts.

The gesture underscored the minister’s commitment to acknowledging the sacrifices and talents of these cultural icons.

Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the importance of preserving Ghana’s artistic heritage, stating,

These legends are the pillars of Kumawood. Their work transcended entertainment—it captured our stories, values, and identity. Honoring them, both living and departed, is a duty to our history and an inspiration for future generations.

James Aboagye added,

The committee recognizes the immense contributions of our legends, and it is very important to visit them from time to time. We are planning to organize a film festival and invite our legends to attend, so we can show them how much we love and appreciate them.

The recognition ceremony sparked emotional reactions from beneficiaries and families of the late actors.

Maame Dokono, a household name for her role in Osofo Dadzie and decades of TV excellence, expressed gratitude for the long-overdue acknowledgment, while Kwaku Twumasi, who is currently bedridden, and Grace Nortey were both moved to tears as they expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the minister for the kind gesture.

Paa George on the other hand lauded President John Dramani Mahama for his continuous support to the aged and widows of deceased actors.

For over five years, President John Dramani Mahama has consistently supported us by providing food supplies such as rice, cooking oil, and sardines every three months, along with financial assistance sufficient to sustain our basic needs.
