The Electoral Commission of Ghana has declared John Dramani Mahama the winner of the 2024 presidential election, marking a triumphant political comeback for the former president.
Mahama secured an emphatic victory, garnering over 6.3 million votes. He received 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total, according to EC Chairperson Jean Mensa. His closest contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.
Mahama’s campaign centered on promises to revitalize Ghana’s economy, pledging to restore financial stability, create jobs, and introduce a 24-hour economy to boost productivity and national growth. His message of economic reform and renewal resonated strongly with voters, many of whom were eager for change and solutions to the country’s economic challenges.
Having previously served as President from 2012 to 2017, Mahama faced significant defeats in the 2016 and 2020 elections against Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. However, his determination and vision for a better Ghana ultimately won him the trust of the electorate, securing his return to the nation’s highest office.
