In a landmark move to restructure and revitalize the Ashanti Region’s film industry, stakeholders have officially established the Kumawood Ashanti Film Association (KAFA) under the leadership of Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister.
This initiative follows recommendations from a committee he commissioned to assess the state of Kumawood, the region’s vibrant film sector, which identified the urgent need for a unified governing body.
The inauguration of KAFA was held in a peaceful and collaborative atmosphere, with industry players participating in a democratic election to select representatives for a new governing board. This board will oversee the formation of a management team to handle the association’s day-to-day operations through a dedicated secretariat.
Dr. Amoakohene, the driving force behind this transformative effort, emphasized that KAFA marks a pivotal step toward strengthening Kumawood’s growth, fostering unity among filmmakers, and ensuring long-term sustainability.
The initiative has received strong backing from key government figures, including His Excellency the President, John Dramani Mahama and the hon. minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Dzifa Gomashie highlighting its significance to Ghana’s creative arts sector.
The formation of KAFA is a major milestone in repositioning Kumawood for success,”
said Dr. Amoakohene.
With a structured leadership in place, we can now focus on implementing further recommendations to rejuvenate the industry and restore its glory.”
