Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante Criticizes BBC for Overlooking Africa Cinema Summit in Coverage of Idris Elba Interview
Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante, the Convener of the Africa Cinema Summit (ACS) and CEO of Ghana’s National Film Authority, has voiced strong criticism toward BBC News for its recent coverage of actor Idris Elba’s interview, following his announcement of plans to relocate to Ghana and champion African cinema.
The Africa Cinema Summit 2024, recently held in Accra, provided the stage for Elba’s declaration, yet BBC News downplayed the event by referring to it as merely an “industry event in Accra,” without acknowledging the summit itself.
Miss Asante expressed her disappointment, stating,
“It’s disingenuous for a global and trustworthy channel like BBC News to not give credit where it’s due.”
She underscored the importance of recognizing the summit, which offered the platform for this pivotal conversation, suggesting it was disrespectful for BBC News to omit it in their report.
Additionally, Asante questioned the BBC’s approach to geographical representation, noting that if Idris Elba had been discussing a move to the UK, the report would likely have been more precise, mentioning the country specifically rather than a broader region.
