“The Betting Tax Was Implemented” – Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson Responds to Amin Adams

Written by on March 12, 2025

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has rejected claims by former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adams about the betting tax, calling them misleading.

At a press conference on Tuesday, March 11, after presenting the 2025 Budget Statement, Amin Adams denied that the Akufo-Addo administration had enforced the betting tax. He argued that although the law passed in 2023, the government never collected revenue from it.

The betting tax that they say they have abolished, we never collected it. So, to come and tell Ghanaians that you’ve abolished something that was never implemented is to deceive the people of Ghana,

Amin Adams stated.

Responding in an interview with Evans Mensah on JoyNews’ PM Express, Dr. Ato Forson insisted that the government had indeed implemented the tax and had already collected substantial revenue.

I don’t think he’s fully informed on this matter because my checks show that the betting tax was actually implemented in the second half of 2024,

Dr. Forson said.

He further disclosed that the government has collected over GH₵80 million in betting tax revenue, directly contradicting Amin Adams’ statement.

The facts on the ground don’t support his claim. Clearly, the betting tax was implemented,

he emphasized.

This disagreement underscores the ongoing political debate over taxation policies and government revenue collection, particularly in the betting industry.
